Edition 2: Friday, May 22, 2026

Hello to all faculty and staff of the Bayard Rustin Educational Complex,

Our spring sports seasons have come to an end, and with that, we can officially close the book on interschool competition for our Titan student-athletes in the 2025-26 school year. And what a year it was! Our 13 teams completed successful seasons, highlighted by Boys Soccer, Wrestling, Boys JV Basketball, Girls Basketball, Softball, and Boys Volleyball all competing in the PSAL playoffs. Check out The Year In Photos.

Most recently:

  • After dominating their first round matchup against Beach Channel, winning 14-0, our Titans Softball team reached the second round of the city playoffs and fell just short to Queens’ Metropolitan Campus. Shout out to Coach Vasquez and the entire softball team!

  • Boys Volleyball also reached the second round of the city playoffs, eventually falling to Walton campus from the Bronx. After the season, the team organized an alumni game with many former Titans coming back for some friendly competition, including many from our 2022 PSAL championship team. Shout out to Coach Sylvester and the entire boys volleyball team!

  • Baseball faced the challenge of moving up in divisions from 1A to 2A, which meant stiffer competition. After starting the season 0-7, the team stuck together and fought hard to finish with a 5-9 division record. Shout out to Coach Ortiz and the entire baseball team!

PSAL Individual Access Program - PLEASE READ!!!

While our PSAL program is certainly robust (many public high schools in NYC offer fewer than the 13 teams we do), many of us have heard our students lament the lack of certain sports at our campus. Football, swimming, girls soccer, and track and field are all examples of sports that we unfortunately don’t offer at this time. But there is good news! As part of the “Individual Access Program” the PSAL mandates that all public school students have the opportunity to participate in ANY sport, even if it is not offered at their own school

We have already had great experiences making use of this program as both a “sending school” (in 25-26, Humanities Prep 9th grader Mila Marcelle Fabre ran track with Lab/Museum and Humanities Prep 11th grader Lily Ramirez swam with Stuyvesant) and as a “host school” (in 25-26, girls tennis had students from Clinton and boys volleyball had students from Lab, Museum, and iSchool).

What can you do if you have a student who expresses interest in a sport we don’t offer?

Please take the following two steps:

  • Email Mario at msimonelli2@schools.nyc.org with the name of the student and the sport they are interested in playing (even better if the student sends the email)

  • Send or escort the student to Mario in room 440 so they can introduce themselves and learn more

In conjunction with the PSAL, I will figure out which nearby school can potentially host our student on their team (nothing is guaranteed - the student will still have to try out for the team just like all other students).

Fall Sports PSA

While many of us have plans to fully escape the world of high school education over the summer, our fall coaches have plans to spend at least some of that time gearing up for their seasons. These are the fall sports, and the respective coaches, that are going to be in action before we know it:

Boys Bowling

Jeff Clooney

Girls Bowling

Lenny Lomangino

Boys Soccer

Francisco Viera Pereira

Girls Volleyball (Varsity)

Anna Fields

Girls Volleyball (JV)

Sammy Jimenez

Girls Tennis

Franklin Santana

Some of these sports start practice and tryouts before we get back to school in September! Please encourage any students who are interested in these sports to do the following:

  • Reach out to the coach via email to express interest

  • Follow @bayardrustinathletics on Instagram for all updates around practice/tryout dates and all requirements to participate in PSAL sports

  • Email the coach and/or Mario with any questions

Until next time,

Go Titans!!!
